Self Portrait and John Safran
Oil on masonite
2 x 122cm x 91.5cm
Accompanying Wall Text:
Most recently my work delves into some of the tensions of relationships in everyday interactions with professional acquaintances and friends.
Prompted by interpersonal dynamics with people in positions of social/professional power, the outcome has been painted portraits and self portraits. The staging of the work toys with the notion of an intimate gaze and the agency of the gaze to transform the interplay between the artist, the subject, and the viewer.
Levels of power and control affect peoples' lives and to varying degrees are influenced by respective professional/social roles. 'Self Portrait and John Safran' draws on the tangle of trust and power between artist and muse.
As a side story, the two works were completed without the intention to be companions. John had seen his portrait, though didn't know about the later addition of the self portrait - until after the diptych was accepted as a finalist. He commented, 'it's like doing a TV interview then being completely misrepresented once it's edited'. A follow up portrait of John Safran is planned for later in 2008.

Accompanying text:
In the Summer of 2004 I sat in the Spiegeltent in Melbourne, grinning ,
as the performers of The Burlesque Hour unleashed their intoxicating
magic. By the end of the show, the thought - as unreaslistic as it
first seemed - had embedded itself; to paint at least just one
character...the woman in the Victorian black taffeta dress.
Internationally acclaimed Queen of Cabaret Bizarre, Moira Finucane in
her work Victoriana - a Gothic revival, a mesmerising slow burn of
repressed desire and grief.
The Burlesque Hour is a lush velvet trimmed salon, where Finucane & Smith (Moira Finucane & Jackie Smith), renowned creators of intimate theatrical spectacles where variety, fairy tale, cabaret, the gothic, and burlesque are melded into indelible visions of gender, power, violence and desire. Described by Finucane & Smith as a 'revolution in a chocolate box', The Burlesque Hour, is an astonishing and edgy performance around femininity and sexuality and packaged in an accessible, sophisticated and cutting edge salon.
In 2004 The Burlesque Hour won four Green Room Awards for Cabaret. It has toured nationally and internationally at numerous festivals. In three years The Burlesque Hour has been seen by over 25,000 people
